Beliefs That Can Influence Behaviors

Self-Fulfilling Prophecies: Beliefs That Can Influence Your Behaviors

Do you believe in the concept? Let me state it another way. “Your belief about what is going to happen drives actions that make that outcome ultimately come to pass.” ( I got that straight wisdom from the all-powerful Google.) IKR

Let me “cut right to the chase.” Leaders will create Self-fulfilling prophecies of Success or probable Failure in their subordinates. If you set people up for “Success,” most of them will achieve it. Having said that, if you “presume” failure in a person, most of them will prove you correct and perform to a lower level of competency; meeting your expectations.

If you have negative “preconceived expectations” or pre-biases regarding the people you are/will supervise, those workers will behave to your expectations.-

To the contrary, if your view as a Supervisor and Leader includes the idea that people will apply self-control in following policies and procedures they will. . And, if given the opportunities that will allow them to use their talents, to contribute to achieving departmental goals, they will. These workers will perform UP to their Supervisor’s expectations.

So what do you think? Do you believe this Self-Fulfilling Prophecy thing? If you do buy-in to the idea that “your behaviors have positive or negative consequences”, then it’s a matter of “conscious choice” on your part. Take inventory of your “behaviors”. What kind of “prophecies” are you fulfilling?

Are you good at setting people up to Perform-Up or Under Perform?
